THAT'S NOT STREET LEGAL

Port Moody Police are reminding the community about the rules surrounding gas & electric dirt bikes.
Throughout 2025, the Port Moody Police Department has fielded dozens of calls relating to dirt bikes operating on roadways in a dangerous manner – predominantly in the Heritage Woods area of the city. This past Saturday evening, patrol officers stopped an electric dirt bike travelling uphill on Noons Creek Drive at 60 km/h (a posted 30 km/h corridor). The 13-year-old rider had his parent called to scene, bike removed from the roadway and a ticket was issued [see image].
In order for a bike to qualify as an e-bike, it must not be capable of exceeding 32 km/h on a flat surface, it must have working pedals/cranks and must also not exceed a certain wattage. Those under 14 cannot operate e-bikes. For more details on e-bikes, see the Province of British Columbia’s website: E-bike requirements – Province of British Columbia
“Operating an unlicenced dirt bike on the road – electric or gas – could land you a minimum a $598 ticket for no insurance,” states Constable Sam Zacharias, adding that “these bikes do present a risk to public safety as we have had several recent near misses involving dirt bikes on our streets with other motorists and pedestrians”
Of note, the nearest area to legally ride dirt bikes is on Eagle Mountain’s crown land.
