FILE: 2026-1794
An alert citizen helped Port Moody Police capture a wanted man after an alleged property crime spree.
On April 26, 2026, around 9:45 p.m., Port Moody Police officers were called to a report of a possible theft in the Ioco Road corridor of Port Moody. The caller reported seeing a man rummaging through multiple vehicles in the residential neighbourhood. Officers patrolled the area and were not able to locate the suspect initially, however, did obtain surveillance footage of the incident. Approximately an hour later, the man was located by officers several kilometers away and arrested without incident. Of note, the man was also wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant.
The B.C. Prosecution Service has approved two counts of mischief and five counts of breaching a release order against 31-year-old Marc Smaaslet. Smaaslet remains in custody at this time and has his next court appearance later this morning.
“Incidents like these are a great reminder of the vital role the public plays in helping us curb crime in our community,” states Constable Sam Zacharias. “We thank the diligent witness who contacted us right away and helped advance our investigation – leading to the eventual arrest of the accused.”
