Youth struck in face by exploding firework

A youth was sent to hospital after being hit in the face by an exploding firework on Friday evening.

On October 2, 2026, around 8:20 p.m., a caller reported a group of youths setting off fireworks near the Port Moody Recreation Complex. Attending officers were surprised when they located a 12-year-old boy who had just been hit in the face by a firework set off by one of his friends. The boy’s friends fled from officers but were located a short distance away.

The injured boy was transported to hospital – his injuries are not life-threatening. The incident was determined to be accidental, however, the youth who set off the firework has been issued a $500 bylaw ticket.

“This incident serves as a reminder of the inherent dangers of fireworks being set off by those who have no business doing so,” states Sergeant Sam Zacharias. “Our city’s bylaws are clear: fireworks are prohibited year-round and can only be set off if a permit has been obtained through Port Moody Fire Rescue.”

The Port Moody Police Department typically sees increases of calls relating to fireworks during the month of October. Those who are caught violating the city's fireworks bylaw may be subject to seizure and a violation ticket.
