Project 529 (also known as 529 Garage) is an anti‑bike‑theft initiative launched in 2013 in Seattle by former Microsoft/Xbox exec J Allard and partners, now based in Vancouver. It provides a free global registry for bicycles and e‑bikes, designed to deter theft, support recovery, and connect cyclists with local law enforcement and the cycling community.

🚲 How 529 Garage works:

• Register your bike via project529.com or the 529 Garage app by entering the serial number, photos, proof of purchase, and other details—it’s quick and free.

• Missing bike? Open a “missing bike alert” in your profile. That turns your entry into a public page, optionally generating posters and sending notifications to nearby 529 users and law enforcement.

• Theft deterrent decals (“shields”): You can optionally purchase a tamper‑resistant shield (sticker) to affix to your bike. It carries a unique code linked to your bike, alerting thieves and buyers that the bike is registered.

🌍 Why it's effective:

• The largest searchable bike registry in the world—over 1.7 million bikes registered, following its acquisition of the National Bike Registry in 2017.

• Cities and police departments across North America (notably Vancouver, BC, in Canada) adopted it early: Vancouver saw a reported 30–40% decline in bike thefts after partnering with 529 Garage in 2015.

• It has since expanded to dozens of cities, campuses, community bike shops, universities, and police forces globally
